A very short post as I set off to run the Portsmouth Marathon, for dementia research charity BRACE.
I’ve just signed up to be a dementia friend and also a dementia champion – an initiative run by the Alzheimer’s Society to get more people to understand what it’s like living with dementia and how to best help people. It’s at https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/
I’ve also been reading a very interesting blog at http://whichmeamitoday.wordpress.com/
It’s written by Wendy, who’s 58, and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s earlier this year.
It’s sometimes difficult to know how best to help people with dementia, so learning direct from those living with the disease is ideal.
Having upset dad with a well-meant homemade Christmas card; disrupted the peace of the nursing home when mum’s dog tried to chase the home’s pet rabbit; and nearly killed off one of the other residents by giving him a piece of cake when he was on a special diet – it’s probably time I did learn more.
I mean at the moment, with dementia friends like me, who needs enemies!
